Overcoming Challenges: Healthy Old Mike’s Journey in the Mekong Cup

In 2024 and 2025, Healthy Old Mike participated in the prestigious Mekong Cup, a tournament that brings together some of the best ball hockey players from across Asia. With a history spanning over 31 years, this highly competitive event is no easy feat, but Mike embraces the challenge with determination and a positive attitude.

As the second oldest player who isn’t a goalie, Mike’s participation is nothing short of inspiring. He spends weeks preparing for the tournament, knowing that it will push him to his limits. With a grueling schedule of at least seven games over two days, followed by a period of recovery, the physical demands are immense. But Mike’s commitment to the sport and his health never wavers.

Living with Sjögren’s syndrome, Mike faces daily challenges that many of us can’t even imagine. This autoimmune condition sometimes leaves him in severe pain and unable to walk for days at a time. Yet, he never lets it stop him from continuing to play and live an active life. His mantra is simple yet powerful: “If I can do it with my limitations, then anyone can do it.”

Mike’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance. It’s not about being the youngest or the fastest; it’s about showing up, giving your best, and pushing through the tough moments. He proves that with the right mindset, anything is possible—no matter what obstacles we face.

For those of us facing our own challenges, Mike’s story serves as a reminder that staying healthy, active, and positive is always within reach, no matter the hurdles. His example encourages us all to push past our limitations and keep striving for greatness, in sport and in life.

Also, each year at the tournament we support a local charity.  This year we are supporting the Baan Nokkamin Foundation which is a Christian Organization that offers assistance to orphans, street children, underprivileged children, the elderly and drug addicts by developing and changing their lives and strengthening them emotionally so that they are ready to face the world in the future.

To raise money at the Saturday Night Banquet we will be having an auction.  One of the items has been donated by Prince Vacharaesorn who is the 2nd son of the King of Thailand.   He is a supporter of our annual event.   Please see the video of the sword which comes from the old capital of Thailand called Ayudhaya.   This shop has made blades and weapons by Royal Appointment.   There will be no reserve and the item will go to the person who bids the highest and it is signed by the Prince and please see attached video.

Good luck to all players this weekend and as always let’s have a great time.
